Sitting down. An ordinary every day position. Yet it was long reserved for the rich and powerful in politics and religion. Seats & Sofas

Sitting down. An ordinary every day position. Yet it was long reserved for the rich and powerful in politics and religion. Courtiers had to stand up around the throne and the pope still on the "Holy See". Today, we can all sit. Armchairs, seats and sofas have all become indispensable to our day-to-day lives and well-being.

Up until the 20th century this type of furniture was only for effect. Seats were flat, backs were straight and padding was thin.If trying to find a comfortable position seems natural to us today, it was not always the case. Until recently, comfort was synonymouswith moral flabbiness*. Politeness required people to sit at the front of a chair, not slumped at the back. It was only in the nineteen fifties that chairs began to soften up until they came to mould the curves of the body completely.

The appearance of television in the home  strongly contributed to the trend in seating. By causing an upheaval in life styles, television changed the way interiors are organised. The living room is no longer just a reception room but the main room of the house where the whole family gathers. Life is organised around a new trilogy : coffee table, television and sofa. If you are going to spend several hours a day in front of a TV, it is only natural for the sofa to become the showpiece of the living room.

Choosing between a two or three seater, a sofa bed and a sectional sofa can be problematic and mainly depends on how much room you have and the size of your budget which is why modular solutions that can be adapted to different requirements are so highly appreciated. An L-shaped arrangement is the most popular. The trend is also towards very large, elegant, designer-look sofas. Paddes leather chesterfields are coming back into fashion in a modernised version. Leather remains an all-time favourite, not soft and cosy as it was in the eighties and nineties, but taut and combined with a steel frame along the medernistic lines of Le Corbusier's LC2. Armchairs and sofas do not match. The total look in the living room is no longer in vogue. In terms of colour, black, grey and neutral tones are still staples with a few brighter touches such as red. Patterns are on the way out. Preference is given to sobriety and plain coverings.

Today's generation loves to be on floor level and loll about on cushions, ottomans and low armchairs. They don't like sitting at a dining room table but prefer eating around a coffee table in a more relaxed fashion.

Benches have also come back. They can be made of wood or metal for a chic, environment-friendly look. They have caught the designers' eye and are being produced in new materials and shapes. Christophe Pillet has created "Loop", a moulded polyethylene oval-shaped Bench with an ultra-contemporary lacquer finish. Charles kaisin's brillant Bench , made of layers of polypropylene, can take on any shape you choose.

"High-tech ergonomical materials adapted to each posture- The seating of the future is full of surprises. Seats for all".

Launched 2006, the Design September festival brings together fifty events concerned with design. Furniture, objects, industrial products, graphic design, architecture. Associations, institutions and other independent organisations offer, between 10 September and 2 October 2009, a rich and varied programme: exhibitions, conferences, private showings, film screenings, debates, visits to designers&rsquo studios, flea market, city tours, pecha kucha, and so on.

While championing its special features and giving preference to Belgian players, Design September is wide open to the international dimension. This year once again the festival will be able to take pride in inviting a broad panel of internationally recognised designers: Tom Dixon, Front Design, Mathieu Lehanneur and BarberOsgerby will thus take over from Ron Arad, Patrick Jouin, David Trubridge, the Bouroullecs, Alberto Meda, the 5.5 Designers, Brendan McFarlane, Maarten Baas, Jurgen Bey and Ora Ito. Moreover, this year for the first time Design September is organising an international colloquium on packaging design and European awards for design and innovation.

Charles (1907-19878) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames are among the most important American designers of this century. They are best known for their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, industrial design and manufacturing, and the photographic arts. They loved their work, which was a combination of art and science, design and architecture, process and product, style and function. led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the 'Eames look.' 'The details are not details,' said Charles. 'They make the product.' Their aim was to create beautiful top-quality mass market products.
In the late 1940s, the husband-and-wife design team created moulded plywood chairs and the world-renowned Eames lounge chair (1956), now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Their revolutionary work in moulded plywood led to their breakthrough work in moulded fibreglass seating.

Herman Miller and Vitra manufacture the furniture designed by Charles and Ray Eames.

    Styles Compendium of Interior
Aside from clothes, the most immediate extension of the human body is the decor in which it evolves. From interior architecture to interior life, the distance is often slight. It is to this coming together of the mental and the ornamental, as well as to the dialogue between form and content, that this work, with its abundant and eloquent iconography, is dedicated. The chapters wed the chronology of the styles that followed one another using, as examples, the most beautiful houses in the world. The first part starts with the Medieval era and ends with the twentieth century, while the second is devoted to the roots of design from the Belle époque to contemporary aesthetics. Each style has its own elegance, its function, and its reason for being. Each style comes back, at one time or another, to haunt new decades short of references. Thus, the periods overlap each other: yesterday via nineteenth century's historicism, and today with the rise of all the retro fashions. But regardless of the choices one makes, what is fascinating in the organization of an architectural volume is that it always speaks of its own time. And it often does so very well.
