    Art and ornaments

After years of being relegated to the background, walls are taking  the limelight once again and are surprising and delighting us with their diversity. Whether they are a window on the outside world or a reflection of our imagination, interior walls are turning into artwork.

Prehistoric caves, Egyptian bas-reliefs and Pompeii frescoes, wall- decorations have existed in various forms throughout history. Only the techniques are different today. Digital technology has revolutionised the ornamental approach to walls. You no longer need to bring in Michael Angelo to have painted ceiling.

Only e few hours are needed to entirely decorate the room with digital wall coverings. Photos have come out of their frames and taken on new dimensions. Size is no longer a problem and you don't have to worry about matching up wallpaper patterns. And prices are accessible.

It can also be a decorative way of hiding defects without having to carry out repairs. A further bonus is that these new hydrophobic coverings can be used in bathrooms, swimming pools and whirlpools.

Phtography has updated trompe-l'oeil, a traditional element of the decorative arts. Imitations, which used to be painted, are now photographed and create optical illusions. A pastoral scene or a blue sky offers an attractive perspective and makes the room seem bigger. Nature is a favourite indoor theme in the city where people miss the trees and greenery. Organic artwork meets  a similar need and has become extrmely popular.

Trompe-l'oeil takes us by surprise. Imitation chandeliers, stacks of books and enormous silver cutlery sets add a kinky, fun touch. The artwork of English artist Deborah Bowness is all about poetic delicacy. It comprises watercolours of photos of everyday objects, lamp posts, chairs and clothing- accessible artwork halfway between painting and wallpaper.

Amusing and styised, hunting trophies are very much in vogue. They have escaped the musty corridors of castles and found their way into the most trendy interiors. The designers have taken over classical taxidermy models with unusual results : fabrics with Anne-Valérie Dupond, papier mâché with sisters Nicole and Aude, balsa wood with Big Game's Moose. Natural, silver or fushia, stags' heads and antlers have shed their dust.

Mosaics have taken on new vitality.Luxury and trendy bathrooms and kitchens can no longer do without them. And when designers such as Marcel Wanders, Patricia Urquiola and Paola Navone step in, they become works of art.

In the same quest for refinement, craftsmen and decorative painters perpetuate tradition by respecting ancestral know-how. Their skills are precious for the renovation of old houses and repair of damaged stained glass and inlaid work.

An excellent way to achieve an antique look is through architectural elements made of plaster. Grotesque figures, cherubs playing musical instruments, caryatids and rosettes re-create an 18th century decor in a contemporary building.

With all these decorative possibilities, nothing could be easier than giving a personal touch to your home. So how about making a new wall?

(1943), American but living in Paris since 1965, is a multi-faceted artist combining a wide range of talents: scenographer, designer, decorator, graphist, painter, photographer, filmmaker ... and poet. Blessed with a sumptuous imagination and an unsurpassed mastery of colour, McConnico creates a world imbued with a magic and poetry found in all his work. Nature remains his main source of inspiration, providing incomparable lessons in style and creativity.
McConnico began his career as a designer for the famed Paris fashion houses, Yves Saint Laurent and Ted Lapidus. Then, McConnico created the sets for about 20 films, including Vivement Dimanche by F. Truffaut. In 1983, he received a Cesar (the French equivalent of an Academy Award) for best set design for the film La Lune dans le caniveau, by J.-J. Beineix. And then he produced some 30 commercials and videoclips.
Since 1988, McConnico has been designing objects, combining fantasy and dream, high skill manufacturing and industrial savoir-faire. Many manufacturers call on him : Daum, Cristalleries de Saint Louis, Toulemonde Bochart, Lampes Berger, Arthus Bertrand, Lanvin, Tissage Moutet, Paristic, Kostka, Jardin pamplemousse&hellip  Some of his design icons like the Daum Cacti and the Pepper carpets of Toulemonde Bochart are included in the permanent collections of many museums throughout the world, particularly the decorative arts museums of Paris, Oslo, New York and Lausanne.
McConnico regularly exhibits his artwork at the Galerie Daniel Besseiche in Paris, as well as abroad. His new, limited-edition collection of contemporary art furniture, numbered and stamped, is offered exclusively by the Galerie Maad in Paris.
In 2005, the Sommet du luxe et de la création (international luxury and design exhibition) recognized Hilton McConnico for his entire body of work with the Talent de l&rsquoAudace award. The January 2006 Scènes d&rsquointérieur interior design exhibition paid tribute to McConnico in a retrospective created by himself.

Since 1831, the mythical Parisian store Deyrolle has offered nature enthusiasts an extensive collection of insects and shells and a wide range of taxidermy animals, natural curiosities, and educational materials for teaching the natural sciences.
But on February 1, 2008, a fire in Deyrolle?s devastated the cabinet of curiosities, entomology room, and a large part of the historic collections that included animals. Laurent Bochet and his camera were there, and he took pictures of the animals, as well as of Deyrolle?s neighbors, firefighters on the scene, artist friends, and loyal customers, all of whom were marked by the event. This work is issued in conjunction with the store?s official reopening in September 2009, and will commemorate a special date in Deyrolle?s history.
