Kitchen equipment

The kitchen of today is very different from that of the past. Designs are constantly evolving to suit new life styles.

Gone are the Bourgeois apartments of the 19th century where the kitchen was relegated to the end of the hall, as far from the reception rooms as possible. The seventies saw the arrival of the open-plan kitchen facing directly onto the living room. The separation between the cooking area and the eating area disappeared. The countertop and now the kitchen island have become the only physical barriers between the kitchen and the living area. The latest in kitchen furniture, they double as a work top for meal preparation and a dining table for relaxed entertaining.

Efficient extractor hoods and silent dishwashers are examples of the technological progress that has reduced kitchen noises and smells and made this new style of kitchen possible. But this complete change in the home environment today is mainly explained by social factors.  Meals are no longer prepared in isolation. Cooking is combined with discussing the day&rsquos events or supervising children's homework. It has become a time for socialising with everyone lending a helping hand.

From a purely functional area, the kitchen has become a living area which is no longer a source of embarrassment to its owner. Stylish and sophisticated, it is part of the overall decoration scheme. Kitchen manufacturers have been quick to take up the challenge and cater to different trends, whether designer, industrial or country-style.

In the contemporary, designer-look built-in kitchen, everything is hidden behind matching façades. Refrigerators, dishwashers and other unsightly equipment disappear and become part of the furniture. The only equipment that remains visible is sinks, ovens (often wall-mounted) and cooktops. Vitroceramic hobs blend in perfectly with the clean lines of this type of kitchen. In terms of materials and colour scheme, full-gloss blacks and reds are a great favourite, often combined with rough timber.

The ideal setting for the stainless steel kitchen is the converted industrial loft. Very similar to a professional kitchen, it is popular with cooking enthusiasts who like to play the chef. Top-of-the-range electrical appliances are no longer hidden but displayed for everyone to see. The range cooker with its mixture of gas and electric burners, hotplate and separate oven compartments is a must and when it comes to keeping things cold, nothing beats the American-style fridge. Pots, pans and utensils are hung on racks and knives are kept on magnetic holders.

At the other end of the scale, retro-style and country kitchens are all-time favourites. Warm and cosy, they correspond perfectly to the idea that the kitchen is the heart of the home and a hub of activity just like farms in the old days. Here, there are no built-in kitchens. Pantry cupboards, kitchen cupboards and sideboards are hauled out of the attic to be used as kitchen furniture. The butcher&rsquos block has been turned into a worktop. Old-fashioned range cookers and stoves have made a great come-back. Several well-known brands have brought out modern replicas with all the latest technology to meet the demand.

And what about the future? What will the kitchen of tomorrow be like? According to a project initiated by VIA in which designers and manufacturers debated about the kitchen¹ in the near future, it will no doubt be environment-friendly, high-tech and compact.

| London Hotel The Dorchester has come up with the Spatisserie, a unique combination of spa and patisserie. The idea is simple: a massage accompanied by creamy cupcakes, cucumber sandwiches and rhubarb pie. A wonderful place to get away from it all!

During the twentieth century, the kitchen is no doubt the room which underwent most of changes, between technological novelties and evolution  of the lifestyles. The new generation ofkitchen welcomes without complex the dining room. Sometimes the kitchen exposes itself proudly, sometimes it hides the technical parts and the domestic appliances to be practically barely visible.
