To celebrate the 10th anniversary of &ldquoNow, design à vivre&rdquo¹, Philippe Starck asked his heirs the question &ldquoWhat are we missing?&rdquo The younger generation of designers is unanimous: what we are missing is intangible. An ideal, a meaning in our lives, air to breathe and the simple pleasures of life all reflect the spirit of the Maison&Objet home decoration fair held in Paris from 22nd to 26th January last.

The bling-bling era and flashy exuberance are over. This year, harmonious shapes and forms are back and design is simple, plain and human. Luxury is now in the use of natural materials and environment-friendly manufacturing processes.  Lines are pure. It's back to basics. Design has found its first vocation again.  It looks good and it's useful at the same time.

The &ldquoCohabitation&rdquo itinerary illustrates this return of the essential. The 3 steps in the exhibition developed by trend hunters Elisabeth Leriche, François Bernard and Vincent Grégoire present the rediscovered values of the home of the future: respect of others and nature, solidarity and multicultural enrichment. These ideas, clearly visible throughout the fair, are the decoration trends for 2010.

Scandinavian design with its pure lines and natural materials remains an important reference. In &ldquoNow, design à vivre&rdquo, dedicated to high tech manufacturers and designers, visitors were able to admire the designs of Danish newcomer Muuto alongside those of the more established Frederica whose classical collection vied with its latest pieces. Because Nordic design is both timeless and contemporary, it is impossible to tell what comes from which era. Thirty years separate Per Borre&rsquos white &ldquoAstral" from Thomas Pederson's "Stingray" rocking-chair, yet they match up perfectly.

The Scandinavia style is also a fertile source of inspiration further afield. A typical example is Constance Guisset, one of the French designers participating in the &ldquoNow&rdquo anniversary exhibition.  Her &ldquoDancing Chair&rdquo, awarded the VIA label in 2009, is like a wooden crinoline in its Nordic grace and simplicity.

In response to today&rsquos dehumanised industrialisation, design and craftsmanship are important allies. Designers adapt traditional know-how to offer astonishing and resolutely modern objects. Elisabeth Leriche&rsquos &ldquoTranscultural&rdquo exhibition shows a significant concentration of this new ethnic vision: Konstantin Grcic&rsquos &ldquoChair43&rdquo made with master bamboo craftsman Chen Kao Ming and Tom Dixon&rsquos &ldquoBeat&rdquo pendants made using an ancient technique handed down by master Indian craftsmen.

This year&rsquos flagship materials are beautiful and eco-friendly: not only wood, bamboo and cardboard but also plant fibres, clay and ceramics. The finish is rough to bring out their intrinsic qualities. The place of honour went to 100% recyclable linen with François Azambourg&rsquos &ldquoLinen Matrix&rdquo installation. One tonne of linen was used to build a 5-metre high hut that offered visitors the opportunity to discover numerous applications of this traditional fibre.

Nature is definitely the guest of honour in the home in 2010 and is present not only virtually in the form of printed fabrics but also in the living world of plants. The &ldquoBacsac&rdquo line, developed by a designer and landscaper, has revolutionised jardinières. These soft, movable containers are perfect for the indoor garden. François Bernard, in &ldquoHybrid&rdquo, shows other possibilities of taking vegetation inside: Patrick Nadeau&rsquos low table planter, Alexis Tricoire's "Oreill'herbe" cushion and Amaury Gallon's green walls will all be purifying the air this year!

2010&rsquos home is looking good. To live in harmony and increase our well-being, we too can adopt these beneficial trends.

Radiators and towelheaters are now considered as decorative objects for many architectural projects. Worldstyle has actively participated in this trend with an everchanging line of products, for water heating or electric projects. Electric lines now offer a full range of outputs & and aesthetical solutions. But the most important trend lately has been to develop new ways of heating and regulating electric radiators in order to reduce energy consumption and bring a better confort to your home. WorldStyle has introduced new technologies such as long infrared radiation, that directly heats people and objects instead of heating the air in a room. The radiating mirror or painted panels created by Verelec or the I-Radium WSood and Flutter models are part of this new trend of elegant and economic heating.

(1974), &ldquoDesigner Scènes d&rsquointérieur Maison&Objet 2010&rdquo is a Spanish artist-designer based in London, with offices in Barcelona and Treviso (Italy). As a teenager, he submerged himself in skateboard culture and graffiti art, the foundation of the detailed, bold-yet-whimsical imagery so imminent in his work today. After studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris he joined Fabrica in 1997, the Benetton-funded design and communication academy. In a short time he was promoted from student to head of their Design Department, where he oversaw projects ranging from shop, restaurant and exhibition conception and design to graphics. Eight years later, Jaime broke out on his own, first with collections of designer toys, ceramics and furniture, followed by interior design and installation. His singular vision was first fully exposed in &lsquoMediterranean Digital Baroque&rsquo at London&rsquos David Gill Gallery, an exciting mise en scène, largely executed in ceramic, followed by &lsquoMon Cirque&rsquo. These collections put Jaime at the forefront a new wave of creators that blurred the lines between art, decoration and design and a renaissance in finely-crafted, intricate objects within the context of contemporary design culture.
Jaime further defined his vision in subsequent solo exhibitions and shows at London&rsquos Aram Gallery, and Milan&rsquos Salone de Mobile and his work has been displayed in Germany&rsquos Vitra Museum, London&rsquos Design Museum, Rotterdam&rsquos Vivid Gallery, the Gronginger Museum (also in Holland) and the Basel Art Fair and has attracted the attention of prestigious art collectors. Jaime&rsquos esteem and knowledge of artisan skills and his inherent creativity has allowed him to push the boundaries of many mediums and functions, resulting in collections for clients as diverse as ArtQuitect, b.d. ediciones, Established and Sons and Moooi, Metalarte and Swarovski, Berhardt Design, Piper Heidsieck, Gaia and Gino and Bosa Ceramiche, Bisazza, Baccarat, Lladró, Ceccotti. Adding to his acclaimed intramurals for Madrid&rsquos La Terraza del Casino restaurant and Camper footwear stores, Jaime is currently working on interiors for leading hotels, restaurants and retail establishments around the world.). His work has appeared in the most prestigious art and design publications worldwide. He has won numerous awards including &lsquoBest Installation&rsquo (Icon Magazine), &lsquoBreakthrough Creator&rsquo (Wallpaper Magazine) and the 2006 Elle Deco International Award. In 2008, Jaime was guest of honor at Belgium&rsquos Interieur Biennial, the youngest person ever to receive the accolade.

Marion Vignal, journalist at Express Styles, helps us discover the key role played by women at the beginning of the 20th century in design. In this very masculine world of industry, architects and engineers, the author shows the real place of &ldquoWomen Designers&rdquo in the 20th century. We find figureheads such as Charlotte Perriand, Andrée Putman and  Matali Crasset, alongside pioneers such as Anni Albers who remained in the shadow of their partners or were totally unknown such as Lina Bo Bardi, an important personality in Brazilian architecture. Marion Vignal bewitches us with a reference work that will fascinate both professionals and novices.
