Feel like a change of decoration? Nothing could be easier. A few ideas, a few products and a few good hints should make your refurbishment a success without having to be a professional painter or spend a fortune. There are several ways of turning an ordinary piece of furniture into a family heirloom. Walnut wood stain, with its deep chocolate colour, is a miraculous way of turning pinewood into ebony in the stroke of a brush.

Liming wax and other special paints and varnishes can also work wonders,  by creating an Olde Worlde look.   The shabby look is achieved by waxing, sanding and distressing to bring out the natural veins in the wood. Open-grain woods such as oak and ash produce the best results. Liming wax containing pigments is applied in circular movements with a cotton pad. If you are renovating old furniture, you will first need to remove any paint or varnish with a wire brush and dust well. Wood staining requires the same preparation and can be finished off with an insecticide or fungicide treatment. Stains are applied in two coats with a special brush.

Another alternative is to paint your furniture. Grey and taupe or bright colours such as red and yellow will completely transform even the dullest sideboard. In just a few hours, a chest of drawers picked up for next to nothing will add panache to your bedroom. And there&rsquoll be no risk of seeing the same model next door. Paint can be used on any surface provided it is properly prepared.  If your piece is already painted, waxed or varnished, it can be sanded down with fine sandpaper so that the surface won&rsquot get scratched. You can also use a grease and oil remover or a polish stripper. For melamine, laminate and formica surfaces, you will need to apply a coat of bonding primer first. This is often the most effective and inexpensive way of modernising an old-fashioned kitchen. Should you use a brush or a roller? It depends on what sort of a result you are looking for. A brush will give it a more traditional look and put the accent on the paint itself.

Another idea is to cover your furniture with wallpaper. Let your imagination run wild with flowers, stripes and spots and don&rsquot hesitate to use different patterns.  Cut the wallpaper slightly bigger than the surface you want to cover then coat the surface with sizing. Apply the wallpaper. Adjust to size using a cutter and flatten with a spatula. Brush the top of the wallpaper with clear acrylic to bond it to the piece and make it easier to clean.

And now for the final details. Changing the handles and adding castors, for instance, can make a world of difference.

But don&rsquot stop at a chest of drawers or a table. Once you get the hang of things, you can start renovating the wall and floor coverings. You can Paint over that old tiling and give the floor a new finish. Yes you can. It just takes a little longer. There are all sorts of products to help you. Before painting ceramic tiles, clean them thoroughly with acetone solvent. An undercoat of bondingPrimer and two coats of special floor Paint and there you go!
So who&rsquos ready to give their house a face lift this spring?

Under the action of the soda lye and heat, the oils gently turn into soap paste. This is the chemical reaction known as saponification.
