    Storage and dressing rooms

Imagine your clothes arranged by colour, hung up in size order, divided into uses and seasons, every item visible in the blink of an eye. Who hasn&rsquot dreamt of having a dressing room boasting order, storage, organisation and elegance?

There are many solutions on the market that can make this dream come true. Everyone can aspire to both functional and attractive storage that suits budget and available space. A dressing room can be created with only 4 sq. m and a walk-in wardrobe requires a minimum 6 sq. m. The "walk-in closet", as it is known in the United States, is ideally located between the bedroom and the bathroom. Another solution would be to partition off part of a corridor. There are two possible layouts: in a U shape for relatively wide rooms and square or L shapes for longer rooms. When less than 4 sq. m is available, there is always the option of fitting a cupboard along a wall, in a recess or lean-to.

Entry level products include standard wardrobes with hanging space only that cannot be personalised. High-end products include made-to-measure furniture designed with the assistance of a sales representative following a detailed assessment of requirements. In the mid-range, modular systems strike a good compromise. Sold in most retail outlets, these modules can be made up according to storage needs and budgets. Customers select the number and dimension of units, interior layout and finishes.

Before making any purchases, begin by taking a good look in your current wardrobe. How many clothes are folded? How many are on hangers? What could be put in storage boxes on the top shelves?

Once these important details are checked, now is the time for some mental arithmetic ! To measure the size of the dressing room, count an average of 3cm in width and 60 cm in depth for each hanger. Dresses and coats are hung at a height of 1m80.For skirts, trousers and shirts, 1m20 is enough. The ideal solution would be rails on two levels on one side of the dressing room and a single higher rail on the other side. Folded clothes easily fit on 50x50cm shelves. There is usually 30cm between each shelf, leaving room for roughly eight items of clothing. No need for too many drawers, two or three per person are sufficient to discreetly store socks and underwear that so easily get untidy.

For even better organisation, a few accessories can be added such as belt hangers, tie hangers and trouser hangers, which turn out to be very practical on a day-to-day basis. A clothes valet, mirror and pouffe give the ultimate feeling of comfort.

There is a large choice of materials. Wood is still the favourite, guaranteeing timeless elegance. Cupboard doors can be in glass or aluminium for a more contemporary style. Opening closets, folding cupboards and sliding cupboards each have their advantages in terms of access and size. Another alternative is curtains instead of doors. Both economical and stylish, they elegantly conceal storage space.

It all makes getting dressed in the morning something to look forward to!

"61 I Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec", from April 24th, to July 22nd, 2010 at Galerie Kreo, Paris.

This new exhibition has a certain delicacy: they use leather to cover electric wires, we cover a set of shelves with a strangely matt mineral-looking paint, and we make mirrored conch lamps. Their research for the galerie kreo is about magic as much as use.
