Artistic, futuristic, ecological &ndash hotels are taking on a completely new focus. Standardised, dehumanised hotel rooms are a thing of the past. Hotels vie with each other in imagination and excentricity to take us by surprise.

The leading names in fashion, design and architecture are being asked to create unique accommodation. In the space of just a few months, two luxury hotels illustrating the new trend have opened in Barcelona :  the very masculine W designed by Ricardo Bofill resembles a sail arising from the water while the Mandarin Oriental, designed by Patricia Urquiola, is a statement in lacework. What a difficult choice!

The architects have been given carte blanche. Immoderation and unbridled creativity, state-of-the-art technological and technical prowess are what characterise these architectural manifestoes. Wide media coverage has turned these amazing hotels into iconic architecture.  After the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Frank Gehry has performed another amazing feat:  Marques de Riscal. the hotel, right in the heart of Spanish wine country, is wrapped up in 1800 square metres of huge pale gold and rosé-coloured titanium ribbons.

The same futuristic lines have been adopted for the Yas Hotel inaugurated in Abu Dhabi in 2009, with its canopy of 5,000 LED-lit glass panels. At night, it takes on a magical quality. A flying saucer that changes colour seems to have landed halfway between sea and land. Nothing is ever too high.

Buri Khalifa Tower in Dubai, the tallest in the world at 800 metres, houses the Armani Hotel. You can swim in the highest pool on the 76th floor, danse in the highest night club on the 144th floor, and swoon over the panoramic view from the highest observation deck! The Sands Sky Park in Marina Bay, inaugurated just a few days ago in Singapore, seems almost stingy in comparison. Yet the hotel, designed by Moshe Safdie, is quite remarkable: 12,400 square metres of landscaped gardens that are home to 250 types of trees and 650 plant species, 200 metres above the ground. A Garden of Eden in the sky.

You want to sleep? Relax? Those are only secondary considerations. Staying in a hotel today is an experience in itself. You want to play at being Jedi? Then you&rsquoll love the Sidi Driss in the troglodyte village in Tunisia used as the set for Star Wars. You prefer Westerns? Then don a cowboy hat at the Dunton Hot Springs Resort in a romantic ghost town in the Far West of America.

Or you could really go for something way out and stay on an oil rig or an airplane. In Stockholm, the Jumbo Hostel is housed in a Boeing 747 next to Arlanda Airport. The nec plus ultra? The cockpit suite! For another sky-high experience, why not try Airstream Penthouse Park in Cape Town. Seven iconic Airstream trailers, converted into accommodation by South African artists, have been brought to roost on the roof of The Grand Daddy Hotel. Nothing if not stylish.
Far from modern times, the adventure continues. Holidays can also provide the occasion for city-dwellers to enjoy a simple, back-to-nature style of living. To meet that need, accommodation is being increasingly offered in the form of yurts, horse-drawn caravans and cabins.  At Un Lit au Pré, there are no carriers to transport your luggage, just carts. Large, attractively decorated tents, planted in the middle of roosters and hens, are waiting to greet you. You can spend the evening by candlelight around the wood stove, communing with nature and your ancestors.

So this summer, forget about routine and show your pioneering spirit!

In January 2004, Dorothée Boissier and Patrick Gilles created Gilles & Boissier, a design agency focussing on architecture, decoration, furniture and graphics. Dorothée Boissier hasn&rsquot put a foot wrong: after coming first in her year at Penninghen-Esaq, Paris&rsquo prestigious graphic arts school, she was project manager at Christian Liaigre before becoming team manager at Philippe Starck&rsquos agency and a partner of Starck Network.

Patrick Gilles graduated from Camando, one of Paris' top schools, with a major in interior architecture and product design. He also worked with Liaigre then with India Madhavi. The creative force and high standards of this couple both at work and at home make them a reference in the field.

Their designs and projects have taken them across the globe: The 1850 M Hotel in Courchevel, W Hotel Pudong in Shanghai, La Villa Restaurant in Paris, the Busy Suzie in Hong Kong, Hakkasan Miami and Cha Cha Moon in London.

For each new hotel, they design the furniture and furnishings using materials such as brushed wood, patina metal, plaster, painted copper and embossed velvet. They love to mix eras and styles, from minimalistic to ultracontrolled baroque and when they take on a project, they treat it as a whole, never losing sight of the human being who is the centre of their preoccupations and determines the scenography of each setting.
