50 product designs from concept to manufacture byJennifer Hudson. Ed Laurence King. 240p. May 2011.

This book provides an in-depth study of the creative and manufacturing processes behind 50 contemporary domestic design objects. Chosen from around the world, they span furniture, lighting, tableware and textiles. The work of both long-established and emerging designers is featured, with each product selected for its significant use of new technology, unorthodox or complex production process, use of innovative materials (or traditional materials adapted in new and unexpected ways) and, in some cases, for the creative concept behind it. Each project is presented through explanatory text as well as inspirational image, sketch, detail shots of production processes and the completed product.

The collection has expanded over the years to include chairs, sofas, ottomans, fenders and tables. In about 2005 Clock House started making Antler Furniture, which has now become a very large part of its business. Made primarily from Scottish Red Deer antlers, the collection now encompasses just about everything that could be made from horn, and Clock House now have the largest collection of Antler furniture made in Europe.

From her training as a textile designer, Elise Gabriel derives a special sense of materials and their potential in shaping objects. Confronting herself to the industrial constraints of furniture design conception, she opened up a new domain.

From this double influence, she has created her own approach to design, where technique, poetry, functionality and form mix together. In memory of her youth spent in the sculpture workshop of her artist father, she also likes to create and to hand make. For her every project is the opportunity to question the ordinary. Whatever the starting point is, a material, a gesture or a technique, Elise Gabriel enjoys very much to reveal it under a new light to her audience.
