Black stone drawing - Works on paper

Black stone is made up of carbon and clay, not ampelite, an oil shale. It is found as a wooden pencil or rectangular chalk. Renaissance painters used it for sketches. They are often made on brown paper, which allows white highlights. The Conté brand offers it in graduation H, HB, B, 2B and 3B.

We nuance with «blurs», but handkerchiefs or just a finger can do the trick. The material is soft, intense black, deep, matte and indelible and slightly oily. The results are comparable to charcoal while being more precise and less messy.
