    MASTERING THE EXTERIOR

The major interior design exhibitions are seeing a trend in furniture that is becoming established:  Indoor-Outdoor furniture. A real phenomenon in decoration with enormous potential!

The fact of today’s society is: the garden, like the balcony, has become a living space. A place where you can both commune with nature and make the very best use of every little space, “outside” is becoming a room just like any other: cared for, comfortable, welcoming. But this conquest of the exterior for domestic use has only just begun...

The budding indoor-outdoor market promises to be a gold-mine in terms of creation, materials and design - a definite area of challenge for outdoor furniture manufacturers. This market will no doubt have to undergo some refinement to adapt to the specific needs - and climates - of consumers around the world, but it has a great future before it...

A new space to furnish - As the natural summer extension of the lounge, the garden now has furniture tailor-made for it. Even if it does look more and more like lounge furniture!

Wickerwork and Batyline, always out in front Resin wicker, with its incomparable qualities of resistance and durability, is unassailable in its position as the king of sunbeds and other loungers. A trailblazer in the field of colour in resin wicker (winner of the French TDM new product Grand Prix, 2009), Hémisphères Editions is still breaking ground, with an entirely modular indoor-outdoor collection that is particularly suited to small gardens (Equinoxe). Continuing its conquest of the garden, the irrepressible Batyline is now available in colours other than the traditional grey and taupe. Shades of yellow, orange and red are alongside a soft violet and acid greens:  a real feast for the eyes! More importantly, the colours of these chairs and sunbeds are fast.

Recycling and "organic", same challenge!  Whether it’s organic cotton, coconut knobs, woven hemp cordage from Jardin Privé… or furniture fashioned from recycled materials yet still stylish, the eco-beautiful trend is gaining ground in the outdoor furniture market. From the odd touch to entire collections, ecological is the way to go! One particularly successful example of a “recycling” style is the splendid furniture produced by the Spanish antiques company Arxe, totally authentic and attractive creations in recycled wood and metal which would look good in a real lounge! Hand-woven from abaca fibre, this spectacular “Pigalle” relaxation armchair designed by Kenneth Cobonpue is part of this talented Filipino designer’s input to the global ecological approach.

Regarding colours: black has the edge - To reproduce the effect of the lounge, black is “in” in the garden. The total black chic from Now’s Home, the elegance of suit-style ecru pinstripes in the new range of Jardin Privé garden sofas - the use of black underlines the adoption of the garden as an “inside” room.  With the finishing touch of designer lighting, the illusion of a second lounge is perfect!

Outdoor is an area where creativity knows no bounds and we will be in for many surprises this summer, such as the astonishing giant “Puzzle” by Ego that transforms into an entire suite of garden furniture or Stéphanie Marin’s “Liquid” whose giant illuminated raindrops bring a beautiful poetic touch to the outdoors!
